In the thought of the ancients, the polis is primarily the place of socialization and politics. Identification with an urban centre and an architectural center is not always taken into consideration; above all in the most ancient phases the physical space of the city is always connoted in negative form. The walled and monumental city is a Hellenistic innovation and only during the Hellenistic period and the advent of the kingdoms of diadochoi we can understand the city in the modern sense of the term. The cities of kings are cities of images where architecture and great events contribute to a new idea of the city.
