The aim of the book is to extract the linguistic knowledge underlying some dialectal orthographies. The author examines a corpus of twentieth-century manuscript and printed texts rich in variations, corrections and rewrites. Through theoretical linguistics’ tools, diatopic and diastratic differences are identified that have their roots in the Middle Ages, allowing the author to formulate hypotheses about the phonology and syntax of the modern Nicosian: unstable vowels, rising/falling diphthongs , interaction between phonology and syntax in the realization of predicates with modal verbs and of the deontic construction ’to have to’.

Abstract
The aim of the book is to extract the linguistic knowledge underlying some dialectal orthographies. The author examines a corpus of twentieth-century manuscript and printed texts rich in variations, corrections and rewrites. Through theoretical linguistics’ tools, diatopic and diastratic differences are identified that have their roots in the Middle Ages, allowing the author to formulate hypotheses about the phonology and syntax of the modern Nicosian: unstable vowels, rising/falling diphthongs , interaction between phonology and syntax in the realization of predicates with modal verbs and of the deontic construction ’to have to’.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
