Renato Caccioppoli was one of the great personality of Italy’s 20th century. A brilliant mathematician and nonconformist professor, beloved in Naples, his hometown, he was also a magnificent pianist and a connoisseur of all arts. Nephew of the anarchist Mikhail Bakunin, he was a libertarian and restless spirit. His political role during the anti-fascist war and in the aftermath, during the peace construction process, will be the witness of an irreducible commitment cleared from all rhetoric. His life was an eccentric one, in which the disorder was bent to the goals of the search for the truth and the beauty, reaching the dignity of a method.
