I Vettii e l’Impero: la nobilitas romana e le regole del gioco politico

The Vettii are the focus of the analysis. The investigation, however, also focuses on their links with the other gentes (Munatii, Neratii, Plautii, Calpurnii, Domitii), that emerged during the transition from the Republic to the Julio-Claudian Principatus and not only. Their rise to power was due to entrepreneurial activity and military service, through which they, on the one hand, could economically support the Augusti, on the other, they became indispensable for the emperors who gradually succeeded one another. The network that was formed, thanks to kinship and amicitia, has some main nodes, identifiable at the time of transition from one regime to another, especially at the beginning of the Flavian era, of Trajanic and Severan ages.

I Vettii costituiscono il focus dell’analisi. L’indagine, però, verte anche sui legami con le altre gentes (Munatii, Neratii, Plautii, Calpurnii, Domitii), che emersero durante il periodo di transizione dalla Repubblica al Principatus dei Giulio-Claudii e non solo. La loro ascesa al potere era dovuta all’attività imprenditoriale e al servizio militare, attraverso i quali essi, da un lato, potevano sostenere economicamente gli Augusti, dall’altro divennero indispensabili per gli imperatori che si succedettero gradualmente. La rete che si venne a formare, grazie a parentela ed amicitia, presenta alcuni nodi principali, identificabili al momento del passaggio da un regime all’altro, in particolare all’inizio dell’èra dei Flavi, dell’età di Traiano e di quella dei Severi.
