Misticismo e nuovo sentimento della natura in San Francesco

This contribution focuses attention on a particular aspect of the spiritual heritage handed down to us by St. Francis, namely his new attitude towards nature and Creation, which has been characterized as “naturalistic mysticism” or “mysticism of nature”. It was thus seen in Francis the beginning of a new sensitivity of Christianity towards the natural world. However, it is more accurate to speak of the mysticism that Francis manifests when he relates to the Gospels, which comes from a direct confrontation with God, which has its roots in the meaning that poverty has for him and in his way of understanding the Christian message through the example of his preaching and his life; it is also exemplified by some symbolic acts that have characterized his spiritual itinerary. On the other hand, his new feeling towards nature, although it constitutes a novelty in the panorama of the epoch in which he lived, cannot be understood in the proper sense as a genuine naturalistic mysticism.

Questo contributo concentra l’attenzione su un aspetto particolare dell’eredità spirituale consegnataci da San Francesco, ovvero il suo nuovo atteggiamento nel confronti della natura e del Creato, che è stato caratterizzato come “misticismo naturalistico” o “mistica della natura”. S’è così visto in Francesco l’avvio di un nuova sensibilità del cristianesimo nei confronti del mondo naturale. Tuttavia è più esatto parlare del misticismo che Francesco manifesta quando si rapporta ai Vangeli, che viene da un confronto diretto con Dio, che ha le sue radici nel significato che ha per lui la povertà e nel suo modo di intendere il messaggio cristiano con l’esempio della sua predicazione e della sua vita; esso viene inoltre esemplificato da alcuni attisimbolo che ne hanno contrassegnato l’itinerario spirituale. Invece il suo nuovo sentimento verso la natura, sebbene costituisca una novità nel panorama del tempo in cui egli visse, non può essere inteso in senso proprio come un vero e proprio misticismo naturalistico.
