The essay focuses on the role played on the English and international political stage by Ælfgifu of Northampton (c. 990?-after 1040), through the witness of some 11th-century voices. In particular we will focus on how Sighvatr Þórðarson, Immo’s letter to Azecho of Worms, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the Encomium Emmae reginae and Adam of Bremen’s Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum deal with Ælfgifu’s exceptional and controversial social, marital and political status.
