Abstract

The representations of the border from the early modern age to the seventeenth century - The paper aims to broadly examine the evolutionary path of the elites’ identities that ruled the border territories in early modern history up to the XVII century. A period of time when, through a range of superimpositions and palimpsests, emerged the main characteristics of these elites. These main traits are at the base of their social, political and economic decisions and of the immaterial relations of the island in the broader Mediterranean context. It was a twine of fluxes that recent historiography has examined in its geopolitical dimension and as a crossroad of ex-changes between people and cultures. However, there is still a lot to study, such as the religious and/or anthropological alterity of these fluxes and how it influences the decisions of the elites. The latter is the perspective this paper has adopted as the key to understand a global network (political, economic, cultural, linguistic, religious and artistic) that from modern age arrived to our days.
