VIAGGI FEMMINILI IN ETÀ IMPERIALE ROMANA

The aim of this paper is to illustrate modality and reasons behind women’s travels in the imperial age. We will examine shorter and longer movement made by women coming from different social classes. Although most of the written sources confirm that women travelled less than men and mostly within a family context, still some sources reveal a more complex and articulated situation in regards of women travels. Women journeyed not only to accompany their spouses or to visit sacred pagan and Christian sites, but they also travelled to visit friends and relatives, to run businesses and even for pleasure and culture.

La presente indagine mira ad illustrare le modalità e le motivazioni che si celano dietro i viaggi femminili in età imperiale romana: saranno esaminati spostamenti più o meno lunghi compiuti da donne appartenenti a differenti categorie sociali. Se la maggioranza delle fonti conferma che le donne si muovevano meno degli uomini e per lo più in un contesto familiare, altre, lasciano intravvedere una situazione più complessa e articolata: non solo viaggi al seguito dei propri coniugi o per visitare luoghi sacri pagani e cristiani, ma anche viaggi per visitare amici e parenti, per curare attività commerciali e finanche per piacere e per cultura.
