As a means of defining Franz Josef Czernin, the term Grenzüberschreitung (boundary crossing) is the most eloquent, and may be viewed as a key to understanding Austrian experimental literature from the Vienna Group to today. Czernin has a propensity for the transgression of borders – between world and language, poem and poetology, poetry and philosophy, poetry and prose, poetry and performance, the concrete and the metaphorical, between literary genres, between media – reflected in a Romantic idea of poetry that is universal and encyclopaedic, therefore capable of containing everything. Hence the use of combinatorial methods that help the poet achieve a wide range of possibilities and increase the potential for discovery and knowledge. To investigate his combinatorial-encyclopaedic methods, it helps to analyse Czernin’s the art of the sonnet, Die Reisen [The Journeys], and the computer-assisted-poetry-writing programs known under the acronym of POE, which complete the circle, in Czernin’s attempt at overcoming boundaries, from the mind that pretends to be a machine to the machine that replaces the mind.
Il termine Grenzüberschreitung (attraversamento dei confini) è il più eloquente per definire Franz Josef Czernin e può essere considerato una parola chiave per la letteratura sperimentale austriaca dal Gruppo di Vienna a oggi. Czernin ha una propensione per l’oltrepassamento dei confini - tra mondo e lingua, poesia e poetologia, poesia e filosofia, poesia e prosa, poesia e performance, tra il concreto e il metaforico, tra i generi letterari, tra i media - che si riflette nell’idea - propria del romanticismo tedesco – di una poesia universale ed enciclopedica e per questo capace di contenere tutto. Da qui l'uso di metodi combinatori che aiutano il poeta a raggiungere un'ampia gamma di possibilità e ad aumentare il potenziale di scoperta e di conoscenza. Per indagare i suoi metodi combinatorio-enciclopedici, vengono analizzate le opere die kunst des sonetts [l’arte del sonetto], Die Reisen [I viaggi], e l’uso che Czernin fa dei programmi di scrittura poetica assistita noti con l'acronimo POE, che completano il cerchio, nel tentativo del poeta di superare ancora una volta i confini, dalla mente che si finge macchina alla macchina che sostituisce la mente.
