The caliphate of al-Maʾmūn (813-833), who passed into history for having hosted at court true ecumenical councils, is the period to which the creation of two of the most important works that have fuelled the Islamo-Christian polemic in Islamic lands is dated: the Mujādala (the Dispute), attributed to the monk Ibrāhīm al-Ṭabarānī, and the Risālat al-Hāshimī wa Risālat al-Kindī, attributed to ʿAbd al-Masīḥ al-Kindī. In these two works both authors attack Islam and its foundations. My research concerns in particular the sections relating to ritual purity and to the major pilgrimage with the intent of shedding light on the ways in which al-Ṭabarānī and al-Kindī represent religious alterity.

Abstract
The caliphate of al-Maʾmūn (813-833), who passed into history for having hosted at court true ecumenical councils, is the period to which the creation of two of the most important works that have fuelled the Islamo-Christian polemic in Islamic lands is dated: the Mujādala (the Dispute), attributed to the monk Ibrāhīm al-Ṭabarānī, and the Risālat al-Hāshimī wa Risālat al-Kindī, attributed to ʿAbd al-Masīḥ al-Kindī. In these two works both authors attack Islam and its foundations. My research concerns in particular the sections relating to ritual purity and to the major pilgrimage with the intent of shedding light on the ways in which al-Ṭabarānī and al-Kindī represent religious alterity.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
