In this paper I will analyze some passages of the Nuzhat al-mushtaˉq fıˉ ikhtiraˉq al-aˉ faˉq, “Diversion for one passionate about touring the world” by Idrıˉsıˉ, and of Tuh. fat al-albaˉb, “The gift of hearts”, by Abuˉ H. aˉmid al-Gharnaˉt.ıˉ. The aim is to highlight the way in which the two authors have represented the other in their works and have sometimes built friendly relations with him/her. I will focus, in particular, on the description of the African blacks and of some peoples of North and Eastern Europe. The representation of the other will be analyzed taking into account the different formations of Idrıˉsıˉ and Gharnaˉ t.ıˉ and the genres to which their works belong: the Nuzha to descriptive geography and adab and the Tuh. fa to travel and mirabilia literature.
