In this article I offer a reflection on the frame of The Thousand and One Nights, its meanings, the narrative strategies that characterize it and the variants it presents in the two most important Arab editions of the oriental collections (Bulaq and Mahdi). I will also highlight the ability of the narrative frame to adapt its characteristics in order to be compatible with the cultures that have received and rewritten it. Some of its premodern and modern ramifications will also be touched upon.

Abstract

In this article I offer a reflection on the frame of The Thousand and One Nights, its meanings, the narrative strategies that characterize it and the variants it presents in the two most important Arab editions of the oriental collections (Bulaq and Mahdi). I will also highlight the ability of the narrative frame to adapt its characteristics in order to be compatible with the cultures that have received and rewritten it. Some of its premodern and modern ramifications will also be touched upon.
