This study investigates the role played by stereotypes in the representation of otherness in some French works. In particular, it deals with sketches based on the (self-)derisory language of some North African-born naturalised French humourists. Secondly, it will focus on recent French comedies which denounce and deconstruct, also through humour, some of the most frequent stereotypes related to the “Arab” world. Finally, it argues how one-man-shows and films constantly contribute to the evolution of representations of Arabity, involving that the social potentials of humour are viewed in a today's multicultural French society.

Abstract
