Abstract

The expression “mediaeval aristotelism” is now widely used in works of great “impact” on the scienti c community, for the value of the authors and the quality of the results. ese studies highlight the in uence of the Aristotelian logic on the exponents of the Platonic tradition of the early and central Middle Ages and the strong interest aroused in the cultural and scholastic environments by the Aristotle’s thought. For this reason it’s clear the merit of those who have produced these studies, which have focused on traditionally neglected aspects of the Middle Ages culture. However, the idea according to which the philosophy that precedes the reception in the mediaeval latin cultural environments of the physical- metaphysical Aristotle’s corpus, because of which a real “epistemological rupture” occurs in the XIII century and it’s established a new and more rigorous model of science, still has a fundamental validity. In fact, this philosophy is uniformly within the hierarchical and participatory scheme of Platonism, it is therefore an integral part of the cultural tradition that in late antiquity is structured as a philosophical koiné and exclusive “horizon” of thought and includes the theoretical forms of the past compatible with it.
