Abstract

In recent years, interest has grown in ancient artifacts that symbolize the memory of past work activities. An attention resulting from the rapidity of technological evolution, typical of our age, which, like the products of industrial production, also makes production processes, tools and artifacts obsolete, still capable of providing performance but rendered useless by the progress of times and therefore abandoned. A concept that applies above all to the monumental ruins subservient to production, that is, factories, support infrastructures and pertinent areas, which is one of the most important aspects of Industrial Archeology. Sicily, although far from the heart of the Industrial Revolution, has been the protagonist of a profound process of industrialization that has seen the rise of various productive activities, linked to the specificity of the place. Their reuse, which in several cases has already started, therefore constitutes an opportunity for enhancement and development for the context. The idea of iving a new intended use to artifacts characterized by large surfaces and a welldefined planimetric system, represents the starting point for new design approaches that allow investigating new spatialities and relationships of multiple nature between the original volume and new functions. The results of the redevelopment of the old complex of the former Acque di Pozzillo plant for the construction of an innovative research and training center will be illustrated below.
