The paper aims to analyse how the complex relationship between the sense of place and the sense of past can be modelled to design sustainable and effective heritage valorisation models. With this objective, the paper discusses the results of the research project OPHeLiA (‘Organizing Photo Heritage in Literature and Arts’), developed by researchers of the University of Catania and focused on the historic neighbourhood of San Berillo, in the centre of Catania. Because of its past and present history, San Berillo provides an interesting case study for investigating, with an original perspective, the concept of sense of place in connection with the sense of past.
