Considering that approximately half of the Romanian emigrants are women, we consider it necessary to pay more attention to this topic of national interest. The article tries to outline an overview of the phenomenon of migration among this segment of the Romanian population, by identifying possible causes, including by analysing the poverty rate, living standards and employment, and also by exposing the possible effects, both positive and negative, at a demographic, economic and social level. In this context, we considered Romania as a source of emigrants and one of the main providers of workforce for the more developed countries in Europe and beyond. A less studied problem is that of the migration of females, including those from rural areas, who go to work abroad. Among the influencing factors of the emigration phenomenon are mainly poverty and material deprivation, inequalities, but also the need for emancipation. Overtime, the reasons why women choose to migrate have diversified. During the analysed time periods, we identified important changes in the data for 2020 compared to the previous year, which, we believe, are largely caused by the crisis generated by the Covid-19 pandemic context that has produced numerous effects on economic activity worldwide
