The essay deals with the theme of the body in the tradition of late antique Christianity (3rd-6th centuries). It presents a few examples from the history of Christian male and female asceticism to show how mortification of the body, practised in this context, served not only to repress the instincts of the flesh and to atone for sins, but also to free oneself from social conditioning and pressures.
