In the fantasy narrative saga A song of ice and fire, George R. R. Martin presents Brienne of Tarth as a dramatic and problematic character. The only surviving daughter of a noble lord, Brienne is considered a freak of nature: tall, strong, muscular, with rough and irregular features, she dedicated herself to the war arts, more suited to her physicality; but in a world that has no terms or categories to define it, it has no place for either women or men. In spite of this, she sincerely adheres to the chivalric values of fidelity and loyalty and pursues them to the end, even as a sublimation of a loving feeling towards important reference figures. In this intervention we will analyze some passages of the novels of the saga that underline Brienne's continuous moving beyond the confines of the suffocating gender definition grids, her relationship with the characters she meets, the situations that derive from it and the psychological weight that her condition entails. Brienne, creature of fantasy, embodies the all too human need to create/negotiate a recognized identity even where pre-existing conditions do not allow it.
