From Inner to Expanding Circle: Recreating English Words in Italian

The work argues that, for a social history of the English vocabulary to be complete and updated, the presence and use of words of English origin worldwide should be included. The authormainly focuses on the Italian context and presents her research carried out on data gathered from the corpus of the Italian newspaper La Repubblica. Her results suggest that there are manyreasons why an English word may enter the Italian language and, once adopted, it may be adapted to perform new linguistic and communicative functions, more often than not in an unpredictable, creative way.

In questo lavoro si sostiene che per costruire una storia sociale ed aggiornata del lessico della Lingua Inglese è necessario includere ed analizzare anche i termini di origine anglofona che arricchiscono altre lingue. Il lavoro si focalizza sul contesto italiano e presenta una ricerca basata su dati raccolti utilizzando un Corpus del quotidiano La Repubblica, opportunamente costruito. I risultati confermano l'esistenza di diverse ragioni per cui un termine inglese possa entrare a far parte della lingua italiana, e dimostrano come una volta radicato, questo possa essere adattato al nuovo contesto per sopddisfare nuove funzioni linguistiche e counicative in una maniera sorprendentemente creativa.
