The Taktika of Leo VI reflect the ideology of power in 9th-10th century Byzantium. The work takes up the great models of the past (from Onasander to Maurice) but it reflects the actuality of the time in which it was composed, in reference to the emergence of the great families of the Byzantine aristocracy and to the need to face the various peoples, from the Slavs to the Arabs. Leo VI provides a model of government based on compliance with the taxis, in which imperial power is the guarantor of the solidity of the State and in which generals must conform to the sovereign even in the possession of military and moral virtues.

Abstract

The Taktika of Leo VI reflect the ideology of power in 9th-10th century Byzantium. The work takes up the great models of the past (from Onasander to Maurice) but it reflects the actuality of the time in which it was composed, in reference to the emergence of the great families of the Byzantine aristocracy and to the need to face the various peoples, from the Slavs to the Arabs. Leo VI provides a model of government based on compliance with the taxis, in which imperial power is the guarantor of the solidity of the State and in which generals must conform to the sovereign even in the possession of military and moral virtues.
