The garden in Greek cities is a fundamental element of the urban system. It relates the management of community relations within the polis and the sacred. At the same time, the garden as a hybrid construction between nature and man, both in the culture of Asian royalty and in that of the Greek polis, marks the social covenant between the divine and the ground and is a sacred place and dedicated to divine entities that mediate between the anthropic and the wild. Starting from the Hanging Gardens of Babylon it is possible to see how this element over time takes on the characteristics of an artificial and natural place together; on the one hand a marvel of engineering, the other mitigating element of detachment between the anthropized landscape and the natural one. The gardens assume in themselves sacred values, gifts, scientific, leisure, but still remain a synthesis of man’s ability to control nature.
