Architettura Dark. Il ruolo dell'architettura tra deserto e desertificazione in Sicilia.

Dark Architecture it's a theoretical and practical thesis about a new paradigm in architecture. A new and old paradigm at the same time. This new architectural approach is more focused on the process rather than on the outcome which is almost always fixed, stiff, rigid. Architecture is a circumstantial and qualitative discipline as wrote Carlo Ginzburg in his book "Clues, myths and historical methods" does mean that architecture has to do with particular facts, particular cases, clues, documents, stories, with minor and marginal details. These details are not less significant for our architects' work. This new paradigm is more natural for the Chinese culture. The world-famous book "War strategies" is linked to the process, while the Western culture is closer to hard science and it has to do with facts and figures, with speedy outcomes. Today it's a problem because science becomes scientism, like a dogma, a religion. I'm studying this new and old approach into human history, I'm studying architectural design and systems which come from the past. But I found out that they are rising again so I'm trying to underline these historical links. For example the link between the ancient Aztec chinampa (a floating garden used in Mexico city) and the contemporary aquaponic's patent (something very similar to the recycled park of Rotterdam, built-in 2018). The word dark is used by the philosopher Timothy Morton, it has to do with a new kind of ecology. The dark ecology is dealing with total reuse and closed-loop systems. The most impressive mental picture, link to the dark thinking, is our bathroom where when we flash the water closet we don't ask: where it goes? the answer is always: somewhere else! Why I'm dealing with this? I started from the process of desertification of my native land: the Sicily! Then I got to underline the difference between desertification and desert. The desertification is a process of decline of an ecosystem and it leads the soil to a progressive wearing out till the dust bowlification (happened in the USA during the thirties). While the desert is extreme, a radical ecosystem and I’m looking to the desert to learn how we can face the environmental crisis. Instability is one of the principles of this new approach in architecture. It comes from biology, instability has to do with life. Instability is IN-STABILITY does mean stability over time, stability in the time (the project). Instability is also INST-ABILITY meaning instant ability, the ability of the moment, of the present (the action project). Instability in architecture means to try to design something ready to respond to temporary needs with instant actions and a long-time perspective.

Architettura Dark parla dell'architettura nella tensione tra deserto e desertificazione nell’attuale epoca incerta. Architettura Dark è una ricerca sul ruolo che l’architettura può assumere in relazione agli altri saperi, in un periodo storico in cui il progetto tecnico mostra tutti i suoi limiti. Lo stile dark è un atavico atteggiamento al progetto che è affiorato sugli strati più superficiali della storia contemporanea, messo a nudo dalla consapevolezza della catastrofe già in corso. La consapevolezza delle conseguenze involontarie che ci hanno condotto all'attuale crisi fomenta le politiche ambientaliste che cercano la sicurezza che non ci siano più conseguenze impreviste – sicurezza impossibile e mostruosa – che sta già solcando la strada verso una società del controllo ecologico. Dark non significa totale assenza di luce, Dark è la penombra che rende sfuggente ciò che ci sta intorno. L'atteggiamento Dark mette a punto una sfilza di strumenti per potenziare il progetto di architettura e riequilibrare il rapporto tra previsione, pianificazione e progetto. Rapporto che ha portato ad uno squilibrio culturale in cui lo scientismo fa da padrone e rende difficile pensare scenari futuri e piccole realizzazioni da sperimentare sul campo. Azioni deboli e diffuse fatte da piccoli e continui aggiustamenti sono la chiave per strutturare la strategia d’intervento. Dark è l'ultimo baluardo contro la sostenibilità e la politica dell’”Altrove", Dark progetta e realizza con ciò che ci circonda senza nascondere nulla sotto il tappeto, Dark ha a che fare con l'estetica, dunque con le relazioni e i campi di forza che queste attivano.
