The paper documents Verga’s ideas about realism, through the examination of the poetic statements scattered in his epistolary and in the prefaces to his narrative and theatrical works. This is a first attempt to read in sequence Verga 's own statements that, although very well known, have so far been read in isolation or occasionally quoted by critics. The organic and integrated reading of these micro-texts reveals a rigorously coherent poetics animated by primarily ethical, and not only aesthetic, instances, which would deserve to be recomposed by aligning and studying all the testimonies in their wholeness. More generally, this first attempt in this sense confirms the validity of the research line proposed by the conference, i.e. that of revisiting the verista experience transversally within the global experience of European and non-European realism, with which it shares theoretical instances, thematic choices and expressive codes.
Il contributo documenta, attraverso l’esame delle dichiarazioni di poetica sparse nell’epistolario e nelle prefazioni delle sue opere narrative teatrali, l’idea di realismo in Verga. Si tratta di un primo tentativo di leggere in sequenza testimonianze d’autore che, pur essendo notissime, sono state finora lette isolatamente o citate occasionalmente dalla critica. La lettura organica e integrata dei microtesti rivela una poetica rigorosamente coerente e animata da istanze innanzitutto etiche, e non solo estetiche, che meriterebbe di essere ricomposta allineandone e studiandone integralmente tutte le testimonianze. Più in generale questo primo tentativo in tal senso conferma la validità della linea di ricerca proposta dal convegno, di rivisitare trasversalmente l’esperienza verista nell’esperienza globale del realismo europeo ed extraeuropeo, di cui condivide istanze teoriche, scelte tematiche e codice espressivo
