On the 13th of June 1909 a new feuilleton by the prolific novelist René d’Anjou, entitled L’Oiselle, was firstly published in No. 24 of «La Mode», a weekly sup- plement of the «Petit Journal» aimed at the female readership. Thanks to her foldable wings and the slender device she wears like a dress, but above all thanks to her absolute absence of any form of fear, the very young Oiselle, capable of flying, solving mysteries and defying crime, will be the first superheroine of the modern world. This study aims to investigate the novelty represented by a work that lies so- mewhere between the sentimental novel and the adventure novel, between realistic literature and fantastic literature, between the cult of science and the drift towards para-sciences and spiritualism, between curiosity for crime news and the celebration of the myth of the nascent aviation.
