L’approccio ermeneutico di Olimpiodoro di Alessandria ai Meteorologica di Aristotele

In this paper, I will examine the interpretation of some passages of Book 2 of Aristotle’s Meteorology by Olympiodorus the Younger of Alexandria in order to show that the commentator’s approach is first and foremost theoretical. Proof of this is that Olympiodorus is not interested in the identity of the natural philosophers whose theories Aristotle mentions, but rather in the theories themselves and in their weak points. Moreover, Olympiodorus considers problems and arguments that, in his opinion, Aristotle had ignored; this, too, is a proof of the commentator’s interest in the systematic explanation of physical phenomena. Finally, Olympiodorus’ theoretical approach is clear from the influence the issue of the eternity of the world has on his reading of Aristotle’s treatment of the sea. This kind of approach is critically assessed in order to provide a balanced evaluation of the commentator’s value as well as contextualized in the tradition of the Neoplatonic exegesis of Aristotle. Furthermore, in order to explore Olympiodorus’ attitude as an interpreter of Meteorology 2, several features of his thought are examined, such as his knowledge of Alexander of Aphrodisias’ commentary, the meaning of his reference to Euripides, the subtle differences between the problems and proofs he considers “foreign to the text” and Aristotle’s questions and arguments, and, finally, his relationship with John Philoponus’ criticism of the doctrine of the eternity of the world.

In questo contributo esaminerò l’interpretazione di alcuni passi del secondo libro dei Meteorologica di Aristotele da parte di Olimpiodoro il Giovane di Alessandria, per mostrare che l’approccio del commentatore è innanzitutto teorico. Ne è prova il fatto che Olimpiodoro non è interessato all’identità dei filosofi naturali di cui Aristotele cita le teorie, quanto piuttosto alle teorie stesse e ai loro punti deboli. Inoltre, Olimpiodoro prende in considerazione problemi e argomentazioni che, a suo parere, Aristotele aveva ignorato; anche questa è una prova dell’interesse del commentatore per la spiegazione sistematica dei fenomeni fisici. Infine, l’approccio teorico di Olimpiodoro è evidente nell’influenza che la questione dell’eternità del mondo ha sulla sua lettura della trattazione aristotelica del mare. Questo tipo di approccio è, nel presente contributo, valutato criticamente per fornire un giudizio equilibrato sul valore del commentatore e contestualizzato nella tradizione dell’esegesi neoplatonica di Aristotele. Inoltre, per esplorare l’atteggiamento di Olimpiodoro come interprete di Meteorologica II, vengono esaminate diverse caratteristiche del suo pensiero, come la sua conoscenza del commento di Alessandro di Afrodisia, il significato del suo riferimento a Euripide, le sottili differenze tra i problemi e le prove che egli considera “estranei al testo” e le domande e gli argomenti di Aristotele e, infine, il suo rapporto con la critica di Giovanni Filopono alla dottrina dell’eternità del mondo.
