After an interval of some eight centuries, the genre of the novel was resurrected in twelfth century by Nicetas Eugenianos and other writers. He modelled his novel after the rhetoric of the second sophistic, particularly that of Achilles Tatius and Longus. The plot includes mythological allusions, rhetorical technique ant intertestuality, pagan gods and rituals from ancient sources, here studied. Eugenianos innovates by making his novel lyrical and pastoral, with erotic songs, letters and laments.
