Platone matematico nel Commentario di Giovanni Filopono all'Aritmetica di Nicomaco

This paper examines all the explicit references to Plato in Philoponus’ Commentary on Nicomachus. Through these references it will be shown, on the one hand, that, for Philoponus, as for the other Neoplatonic philosophers, Plato would have considered mathematics as anterior and leading to his dialectical philosophy – and to this end he would have taken its –, and on the other hand that mathematics contain the laws on which the physical world is built. The cosmogony and the psychogony of the platonic Timaeus in fact would not subsist without mathematics

Questo articolo prende in esame tutti i riferimenti espliciti a Platone che Giovanni Filopono fa nel suo Commentario a Nicomaco. Attraverso questi riferimenti risulterà dimostrato in primo luogo che per Filopono, come per gli altri filosofi neoplatonici, Platone avrebbe considerato le matematiche anteriori e propedeutiche alla dialettica delle forme, e a questo scopo se ne sarebbe servito, e in secondo luogo che le matematiche racchiudono le leggi sulla base delle quali è costruito l’universo fisico, se è vero che tutta la cosmogonia e la psicogonia del Timeo non sussisterebbero senza le matematiche
