Linear Texts A and B and the archaeozoological record represent the main sources of information for reconstructing animal resource exploitation practices in the second millennium on Crete. However, comparison between these two categories of archaeological data poses specific problems from which often derive contrasting interpretation. Aim of this paper is to identify and contextualize the elements, albeit sparse, that seem instead to converge in defining three main patterns of pastoral resource exploitation in the Minoan and Mycenaean periods: the Minoan palatial model, the Mycenaean palatial model, and the extra-palatial domestic model. They also attempt to characterize the aforementioned models in terms of mobility, based on the presence/absence of six key factors for the identification of transhumant pastoralism: mobility, complementary use of pastures, scale, high productive specialization, presence of a market and complex social entities.
