Based on literature data both environmental characteristics and information on benthic flora and vegetation of the Vendicari salt marshes (Syracuse, Italy) are given. The benthic flora consists of 10 taxa at a specific and infraspecific level belonging to Rhodophyta (1), Chlorophyta (6) and Angiospermae (3). As regards the vegetation, the following five communities, dominated by Ruppia cirrhosa, by Lamprothamnium papulosum, by Potamogeton pectinatus, by Althaenia filiformis and Ulva flexuosa ssp. pilifera and by Cladophora fracta and Ulva prolifera, were recorded.
