Justice and Home Affairs as a new Tool of European Policy: The Case of Mediterranean Countries,

This chapter analises the role of the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice of the European Union and it argues the AFSJ is one of the main instruments of the EU's Foreign Policy in the framework of Euro-Med relations. The AFSJ is an instrument for fostering the role of the EU as a democracy promoter and managing the EU’s domestic security policy. Neverthless, even if the AFSJ is part of the EU’s Mediterranean policy, the ability of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership to promote political change will be limited in the authoritarian regimes of the Mediterranean.
