This paper aims to trace the very first editorial history of the Latin veterinary medicine treatise of Pelagonius (4th century AD) starting from the first attempt by Francesco Del Furia and Giovan Battista Zannoni begun in 1810 and then never completed, but of which a manuscript draft and various testimonies remain. It also deals with the genesis of Giuseppe Sarchiani’s editio princeps, which was later printed posthumously by Gaetano Cioni in 1826. The second part of this study, which concerns above all the controversies aroused by the publication of Cioni, appeared in «Commentaria Classica» 9, 2022, pp. 131-155.
