La Sicilia in età neroniana: una “terrificante insularità”?

In the monographic works dedicated – for at least thirty years to this part – to Roman Sicily, the literary testimonies concerning the age of Nero (54-68 A.D.) are substantially reduced to the narration of three (or four) events, which however appear to be connected only “indirectly” with this emperor and concern the civitas of Syracuse, a place of spectacula and seaport. Compared to this image promoted by a sparse, worn, “abused” and sometimes even misunderstood or over-interpreted documentation, the analysis of literary sources hitherto not taken into due consideration allows us to draw a different, and in some respects disquieting, profile of the island in the Neronian period.

Nei lavori monografici dedicati – almeno da un trentennio a questa parte – alla Sicilia romana le testimonianze letterarie concernenti l’età di Nerone (54-68 d.C.) si riducono sostanzialmente alla narrazione di tre (o quattro) eventi, i quali tuttavia appaiono connessi soltanto “indirettamente” con questo imperatore e riguardano la civitas di Siracusa, luogo di spectacula e scalo marittimo. Rispetto a quest’immagine propagandata da una documentazione scarna, logora, “abusata” e talora persino fraintesa o sovrainterpretata, l’analisi di fonti letterarie sinora non tenute nella debita considerazione permette di tracciare un profilo diverso, e per certi aspetti inquietante, dell’isola in età neroniana.
