The literature provides increasing evidence that co-verbal gestures partake in utterances. This position is supported by the observation, in several languages, that a suspension of speech due to planning issues often corresponds to a suspension of gestural activity. However, studies on the correlation between speech disfluency phenomena and co-occurring gestures differ considerably over methodological approaches and mostly concern dyadic interactions produced under highly controlled conditions. A comprehensive and dynamic view of the simultaneous development of speech and gesture production at places in communication where speakers intervene to manage production issues is still lacking. This study is based on productions from a real-life communicative context, namely, visits of museum heritage led by expert guides. The representative efficacy of a method for the analysis of disfluency phenomena in a bimodal perspective, at both the phono-articulatory and gestural levels, is proposed and verified.
