Among the young Sicilians who came to the Society of Jesus in the second half of the 16th century, the mission of of Jesus, the mission evoked above all the extraordinary experience of Francis Xavier in the East, recounted in his annual letters, printed and distributed by the Company. The first journey of the Great Evangelical Mission was organised in 1573 by the new General of the Order, the Belgian Everardo Mercuriano, with the sending of Indipetae chosen by the various provincial fathers. For Sicily, the choice was made by Father Provincial Domenech, one of the first Jesuits and a young confessor of Francis Xavier himself, as well as the founder of the Sicilian "mission" in 1547. The article recalls the formation, the aspirations and the missionary vocation of the first Sicilian Jesuits who went to the missions of the East.
Tra i giovani siciliani che nella seconda metà del XVI secolo entrarono a far parte della Compagnia di Gesù, la missione evocava soprattutto l’esperienza straordinaria di Francesco Saverio in Oriente, raccontata nelle sue lettere annuali, stampate e fatte circolare dalla Compagnia. Il primo viaggio della Grande Missione Evangelica fu disposto nel 1573 dal nuovo generale dell’ordine, il belga Everardo Mercuriano con l’invio di Indipetae selezionati dai diversi padri provinciali. Per la Sicilia, la scelta fu compiuta dal padre provinciale Domenech, tra i primi gesuiti e giovane confessore dello stesso Francesco Saverio nonché fondatore nel 1547 della “missione” siciliana.
