Vibration is the most important and known risk connected with the use of modern portable harvesters for olive harvesting. At the same time, acceleration measurement is a quite complex task, being affected by several factors, very difficult to standardize. In this research one commercial machine was used and acceleration values were measured both in laboratory, using a special test bench purposely developed, and in field, under ordinary working conditions. The results showed that laboratory tests produced on average acceleration values 24% higher than field tests, especially near the hand-grip, and wider data dispersion. Both results may depend on the depth with which the harvester head is inserted into the test bench, which in turn affects the resistance encountered by the sticks. So, further tests are necessary to better control these aspects in such a way to develop a device useful to standardize the measurement conditions for these harvester machines.
