A new hypothesis is advanced regarding the etymology of the Latin word ballo, meaning ‘to dance’. This hypothesis considers the occurrences of the Greek verb βαλλίζω and the Romance language developments. Special attention is also initially reserved for the connection between the Latin terms addenso/denso and the Italian word danzare, as well as the significance of the Greek verbs σακκάζω / σακκίζω and σάσσω.

Abstract

A new hypothesis is advanced regarding the etymology of the Latin word ballo, meaning ‘to dance’. This hypothesis considers the occurrences of the Greek verb βαλλίζω and the Romance language developments. Special attention is also initially reserved for the connection between the Latin terms addenso/denso and the Italian word danzare, as well as the significance of the Greek verbs σακκάζω / σακκίζω and σάσσω.
