La grandezza e l’acume storiografico di Gibbon sembrano apparire con grande evidenza nell’interpretazione, diremmo moderna,del ruolo sociale, politico, economico, militare, della Chiesa cristiana inun’ottica che contempla l’armonizzazione di un notevole bagaglio distudi antiquari alla luce dell’ermeneutica filosofica della storia, secondouna tradizione destinata ad acquisire rilievo nella storiografia successiva.Una storiografia impegnata a rinvenire il sincronismo deglielementi culturali e speculativi nella cornice dei meri fatti, in quantotali, “non-storici”, senza poterne prescinderne. La traduzione e il commento dei capp. XV e XVI de "La storia della decadenza e caduta dell’Impero romano", mette in evidenza la potenza di un pensiero pienamente moderno in una nuova traduzione.
