The volume contains the original text, unpublished in Italy of “La Mandragore”, Jean Lorraine' fantastic tale, and an original and unpublished translation written by Carminella Sipala, specifically for the occasion, and an introductory essay, also written by Carminella Sipala. The volume has been inserted in the section dedicated to "Brief story in nineteenth century. Between real and fantastic" of the series “Esagono d’Inchiostri”. The volume and the introductory essay means to be a contribute to the reflection about literary genres, their phenomenology and the continuous mutation that, in fin-de-siècle literature's logic, assumes willingly the shapes of perversion. At the meeting point between story tale and gothic narrative, Lorrain rediscovers medieval atmospheres and the Christian marvellous, to rewrite his personal Legenda aurea, following Flaubert's "Légende de Saint Julien Hospitalier" example.
