Le chiese minori del centro storico di Catania e i danni bellici: tra sostituzioni, conservazione disattesa e ruderi irrisolti

The paper exhibits part of the research aimed at clarifying the causes, modalities, and effects of the transformations of Catania’s historic centre in the 20th century, focusing on the small confraternal churches after World War II. It shows how the damage became an opportunity for building speculation that replaced historic churches with residential buildings or new churches in other places, leaving the ruins behind in decay.

Il contributo espone parte dei risultati di una ricerca volta a chiarire cause, modalità e conseguenze delle trasformazioni subite dal centro storico di Catania nel XX secolo, focalizzando l’attenzione sulle piccole chiese confraternali all’indomani del secondo conflitto mondiale. Si evidenzia criticamente come i danni divennero il pretesto per una speculazione edilizia che ha visto sostituire le preesistenze con edifici condominiali o con nuove chiese in altri luoghi, abbandonando il rudere.
