In Catania the traditional trade, while anchored in outdated patterns, continues to play an important role, even if threatened by modern retail, which is spread by force in the territory. Outside the historic center many shopping malls have sprung up from the eighties. The present work offers an overview of the phenomenon and aims to suggest its evolution in the coming years.
