The text of some exemplary courses in Institutions of literary criticism and methodology held by Gaetano Compagnino at the University of Catania in the 1980s has finally come to light. Accompanied by a dense introduction and an accurate commentary, the volume is not only a document of the research and humanistic didactics carried out in an Italian university, nor only the testimony of a coherent, original, non-eclectic perspective on literature. In tackling and defining fundamental categories (content of the work, form, action, plot, modes of representation, literary genres, realism), Compagnino not only took up the thought of fundamental classics of literary criticism and theory (Goethe, Schiller, Hegel, De Sanctis, Lukács), with textual exemplifications drawn from great European literature, but also went back to Aristotle's Poetics, interrogating it with ever new questions. This focus on the Aristotelian text proved to be a precursor of the recent, fruitful rediscovery, in the international sphere of literary theory and history studies, of the long shadow of the Poetics, far beyond classicism. The perspective on literature in this book, far from being preceptistic, is European, not lingering in the closed space of the confines of a national literature, and resolutely focused on the crucial questions of the complex relationship literature-reality, as well as the elaboration of a theory of literature ‘in itself’. In addition to the duty of remembrance, the ethical-civil obligation of defending and restoring the truths of those who have gone before us, the work published here also responds to the need, felt by the editors, to make available to the new generations a lesson in theoretical-conceptual elaboration, method and values, which can contribute to a conscious study of literary forms in their relationship with history.

Abstract
In addition to the duty of remembrance, the ethical-civil obligation of defending and restoring the truths of those who have gone before us, the work published here also responds to the need, felt by the editors, to make available to the new generations a lesson in theoretical-conceptual elaboration, method and values, which can contribute to a conscious study of literary forms in their relationship with history.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
