Devilish Apparitions in Mesopotamian Incantation Bowls. Preliminary Remarks About Demons in the Guise of Animals

The large corpus of Mesopotamian Incantation Bowls inscribed in Jewish Babylonian Aramaic, Mandaic and Syriac languages has been studied for more than 150 years. The issues in these texts are important for the research on language, religious identity and cultural syncretism in Late Antiquity. As a matter of fact, many texts contain references to demons, evil beings, malevolent agents and the like. In some cases, the demons are said to be able to appear in the guise of animals and to send out barks and cries. This fact appears to be one of the most fearful threats to the safety of human beings.

L’ormai ampio corpus delle coppe magiche mesopotamiche iscritte con testi in aramaico giudaico babilonese, siriaco e mandaico è oggetto di studio da più di 150 anni. Diversi aspetti di questi testi sono importanti per la ricerca sulle lingue, l’identità religiosa e il sincretismo culturale della Tarda Antichità nel Vicino Oriente. Un buon numero di testi contiene riferimenti a demoni, esseri maligni, agenti ostili ed entità negative. In alcuni casi i demoni sono ritenuti capaci di apparire a uomini e donne sotto forma di animali e di comportarsi come loro. Questa possibilità costituisce una delle più pericolose minacce alla sicurezza e alla salute degli esseri umani.
