In the last few decades a series of both published and unpublished Hatran texts have been studied by the participants in the scholarly discussion. As a new comprehensive volume featuring Hatra inscriptions is shortly to be published, it is worth briefly discussing some of the latest achievements of Hatran Aramaic epigraphy in a broader perspective. It is fundamental to compare some new data of Hatran texts with the epigraphic testimonies from the Upper Euphrates valley, such as those found in the area of Osrhoene, customarily considered the cradle of Syriac language and culture. Together with other evidence, this comparison will help in formulating some working hypotheses as regards the position of the Hatran language and culture between Eastern Mesopotamia and Western Jazirah in the first centuries of our era.

Abstract
In the last few decades a series of both published and unpublished Hatran texts have been studied by the participants in the scholarly discussion. As a new comprehensive volume featuring Hatra inscriptions is shortly to be published, it is worth briefly discussing some of the latest achievements of Hatran Aramaic epigraphy in a broader perspective. It is fundamental to compare some new data of Hatran texts with the epigraphic testimonies from the Upper Euphrates valley, such as those found in the area of Osrhoene, customarily considered the cradle of Syriac language and culture. Together with other evidence, this comparison will help in formulating some working hypotheses as regards the position of the Hatran language and culture between Eastern Mesopotamia and Western Jazirah in the first centuries of our era.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
