The passages in the Oneirokritikà concerning, on the one hand, Asclepius and, on the other hand, the incubatio practised at the Asklepieion in Pergamum and the Alexandrian Sarapeion provide interesting information from two points of view: on the one side, Artemidorus of Daldis’ secular and rationalist attitude towards the healing divinities, even if free of polemical or anti-religious elements, and on the other side, the hostile distrust of the professional oneirokrites towards incubatory medicine, based on an unreliable exegesis of oneiric remedies and disseminated through a iatromantic treatise steeped in ridiculous manipulations subject to popular credulity.

Abstract
The passages in the Oneirokritikà concerning, on the one hand, Asclepius and, on the other hand, the incubatio practised at the Asklepieion in Pergamum and the Alexandrian Sarapeion provide interesting information from two points of view: on the one side, Artemidorus of Daldis’ secular and rationalist attitude towards the healing divinities, even if free of polemical or anti-religious elements, and on the other side, the hostile distrust of the professional oneirokrites towards incubatory medicine, based on an unreliable exegesis of oneiric remedies and disseminated through a iatromantic treatise steeped in ridiculous manipulations subject to popular credulity.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
