The article presents the position of Ogata, a physician from Akizuki who, inspired by the 1743 Chinese Yizong jinjian (Golden Mirror of the Medical Tradition), successfully administered variolation. Ogata’s writing is probably the first to explain to ordinary people the importance of the Chinese immunological practice in order to promote its adoption. It also contains references to previous attempts at smallpox prevention in Japan and other data related to the theme.
