Abstract

The topic of sustainable and resilient regeneration of metropolitan urban systems is increasingly focusing on the denition of appropriate strategies related to periurban and rural areas,to identify their specic potential in terms of contribution to the re-balancing of ecosystem services in relation to the most densely populated urban centres, and to promote new opportunities for socio-economic and productive development linked to the recovery and enhancement of the identity values of places and communities. These are highly interrelated areas, which is necessary to read in their complexity and interdependence, through a holistic approach that takes into account how the environmental and ecosystemic components are linked tosocial and human components. This means working in an inter-scalar and inter-sectorial way, avoiding discontinuity in the design approaches.
