Anziani e anziane nell’Oriente tardoantico e bizantino: ospizi, ospedali e mense

The role and function of the elderly in the classical world have often been the subject of reflection by both ancient writers and modern scholars. In addition to the ethical (‘usefulness’ of the old), gerontological-geriatric (physiological and pathological specificities of the elderly) and anagraphic-legal aspects, there are also those that are strictly charitable. Here we are concerned with identifying the places, times and builders in the Late Antique East of reception (γηροκομεῖα), care (γεροντοκομεῖα) and catering (γηροτροφεῖα) facilities specifically intended for ‘fragile’ subjects such as the elderly men and women, in need of hospices, hospitals and canteens respectively.

Il ruolo e la funzione dell’anziano nel mondo classico sono stati spesso oggetto di riflessione da parte sia degli scrittori antichi sia degli studiosi moderni. Oltre agli aspetti etici (‘utilità’ del vecchio), gerontologici-geriatrici (specificità fisiologiche e patologiche degli anziani) e anagrafico-giuridici, esistono anche quelli strettamente assistenziali. In questa sede ci si occupa di individuare luoghi, tempi e artefici della realizzazione nell’Oriente tardoantico di strutture di accoglienza (γηροκομεῖα), cura (γεροντοκομεῖα) e ristorazione (γηροτροφεῖα) specificamente destinate a soggetti ‘fragili’ come gli anziani e le anziane, bisognosi rispettivamente di ospizi, ospedali e mense.
