This essay offers an overview of the most recent theories on the origins and evolution of long (龍), the Chinese dragon. Drawing from archaeological, iconographic, and textual sources, the article examines the transformation of the dragon from a composite zoomorphic symbol to an imperial emblem. Particular attention is devoted to the interrelation between myth, political authority, and artistic representation, as well as to the trans-cultural exchanges that may have contributed to shaping the dragon’s iconography in ancient China.
