In recent decades, the increasing introduction of neo-liberal and entrepreneurial urban policies by the administration of many of the most dynamic and innovative cities in America, Europe and Asia has provided a strong driving force for the development of urban tourism. In this paper we examine some paradigmatic examples of urban policy, which, through innovation, creativity, culture, art and architecture, have attempted to make vital and attractive cities and neighbourhoods. A particular attention has been dedicated to the works of the new contemporary architecture, which have dramatically affected identity and attractiveness of urban areas. However, the paper will not omit considering questions and doubts that are raised about the value, the social impact and the force of attraction of this experimental architecture of the third millennium. Ultimately, identity, vitality, attractiveness and the atmosphere that mark the streets, squares, markets and other public spaces, depends more on the people who use them that on the creativity of the works of architects and planners. However, it is not only the works of architecture to raise doubts regarding their ability to achieve attractive landscapes, the paper takes also into account the projects encouraging the formation of cultural neighbourhoods and districts, or those aimed at developing tourism in the multi-ethnic suburbs of the city. From this brief summary, made of comparisons and critical reflections on the most common tourism-oriented urban policies, the difficulty emerges of evaluating permanently the results of these policies. Too many questions remain open about the policies in place and their ability to achieve a success which is not ephemeral. Certainly specificity and originality are important requirements, however it is essential for projects and initiatives to envision landscapes, which could be experienced by local communities, who are the real actors and interpreters, as well as the main beneficiaries.
